About Willow Grove Inn

"Willow Grove is a real architectural gem."

The Washington  Times

A magnificent 18th century plantation steeped in history, Willow Grove is a veritable showplace of period furnishings. But, despite its elegant antiques and classical touches, Willow Grove is friendly and warm. Owner and innkeeper Angela Mulloy dishes up a rare elegance and panache along with superb cuisine.

Began as a modest frame structure built by Joseph Clark in 1778, Willow Grove was nearly doubled in size with a brick portion, added about 1820 by the men who had recently finished work on Thomas Jefferson's University of Virginia. The manor house  has withstood the ravages of two wars. Generals Wayne and Muhlenberg camped here during the Revolutionary War, and the mansion was under siege during the Civil War. Trenches and breastworks are visible near the manor house, and a cannonball was recently removed from the eaves.

Throughout the centuries, the plantation has retained a grace of understated elegance combined with old-world charm. Through the years, it has been carefully preserved to look the way it would have naturally evolved, and today, Willow Grove still remains true to its origins. The exterior is an impressive example of Jefferson's Classical Revival style, while the interior retains Federal simplicity. The manor house, which suffered the ravages of two wars, emerged into the twentieth century virtually unscathed. The original wide pine flooring, fireplace mantels, and wainscoting are a perfect background for the carefully selected 18th and 19th century furnishings that fill each room.

Acres of lawns are shaded by hundreds of ancient trees. Victorian gardens boast peonies, magnolias, and boxwood from a bygone era. And an unspoiled countryside setting offers breathtaking views that haven't changed in centuries.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Willow Grove has been designated a Virginia Historic Landmark. Fiske Kimball, noted Jeffersonian architect, confirmed Willow Grove's history and termed the property "a unique example of the picturesquessness of growth."

Willow Grove is truly a place to relax and unwind. A total escape from the ordinary. A must for everyone who dreams about the old South.
